Yoga for Seniors: Benefits, Best Classes, and How to Get Started

Staying active is an essential part of healthy living. When we move and strengthen our bodies, not only do we get in better shape; we also reduce the risk of developing several health problems, including joint problems, heart disease, and diabetes. Many people think that staying active is not that important as we age, but as many studies have shown, it is necessary for healthy aging. And yoga is an excellent choice to help us achieve this.

Is yoga safe for older adults?

Many people wonder if older adults can practice yoga, and the answer is: yes! In fact, yoga is especially recommended for seniors as a safe, gentle practice to stay active. The slow pace of each pose, as well as the breathing exercises done during each class, makes yoga an ideal activity for adults who want to stay active and preserve their mobility, balance, and agility as they age.

Benefits of yoga for seniors

As we’ve explained in previous articles, yoga is not limited to stretching and doing advanced poses, but rather a practice with different styles, some of which are especially beneficial and recommended for older adults. Here’s a short list of the many benefits of yoga for seniors:

  • Supports longevity. Practicing yoga increases walking speed and the ability to rise from a chair, both associated with less frailty and increased longevity.
  • Relieves back pain. It activates the muscles that support the back and spine through gentle stretching and slow, controlled movements.
  • Can prevent falls and injuries. As a practice that strengthens muscles and enhances flexibility, balance, and agility, it can help reduce the risk of falls and injuries.
  • Promotes healthy aging. Yoga helps modulate oxidative stress, inflammation, and telomere dynamics, all of which are crucial in the aging process.

“I’m a 73-year-old man and felt like it was getting harder to move around; my body felt stiff. Thanks to a friend who introduced me to yoga, my life has changed not only mentally but also physically. Overall, I’m a much happier person because I feel healthier. Physically, I am in much better shape: more flexible, strong, calm, and I feel much happier in life.” – Gustavo, Vinyasa and Yin Yoga student

Yoga for seniors: how to choose the right class

Now that we know the benefits of senior yoga, the next question is: which class is right for older students? At Prana Yoga Studio, we offer a few classes that may be better suited to different needs, abilities, and comfort levels:

Hatha yoga. In this class, we approach yoga in its traditional form, focusing on slow, mindful poses and breathing techniques to promote relaxation and improve flexibility, balance, and coordination. It can be a great option for seniors looking for a practice that combines movement, strength, and mindfulness.

Restorative yoga. Using props like blankets and bolsters for support, this low-impact practice features slow, gentle poses held for longer periods to promote joint mobility without straining the muscles. It’s particularly well suited for older adults who prefer a slower-paced practice or want to focus on gentle movement and relaxation.

Chair yoga. In this class, poses are performed with chair support for added stability, making it an ideal option for seniors and individuals with limited mobility. It’s a great choice for those who may feel more comfortable practicing with additional support or who have difficulty getting down to or up from the floor.

If you’re unsure which class is right for you, don’t hesitate to ask us for guidance. We’re happy to help!
