At Prana Yoga Studio in Imperial Valley, one of our goals is to preserve the authenticity of yoga as much as possible, honoring the individuality of every person who steps into our classes. To understand this, it is essential to be familiar with the roots of yoga.
Yoga’s Origins: Mind, Body, and Spirit
Most people are aware that yoga originated in India many centuries ago as a spiritual practice to unite body, mind, and spirit. But what they might not know is that, while the physical aspect of yoga can certainly be traced back to several centuries, many of the postures or asanas practiced today were not central to any of the older traditions of yoga, which were more focused on breathing, relaxation, and meditation in seated postures.
Over time, yoga has evolved from meditative postures centering on controlling the mind and body to a movement-based fitness program in the Western world. But at its core, the purpose of yoga remains: to improve our lives by joining mind and body through the combination of postures, breathing, and meditation.
Why Returning to the Roots of Yoga Matters
While yoga is now widely practiced and frequently posted about on social media, this ancient practice is more than just a fitness trend and a way to stay active. This is why at Prana Yoga we aim to preserve the authenticity of yoga, giving special emphasis to breathing techniques and meditation, as every pose and every breath is a step toward reconnecting with each person’s true self.
“Yoga found me in 2009 at a time when my life felt like it was falling apart. I was lost, searching for direction, and it was through the gentle yet powerful practice of yoga that I learned to trust, surrender, and flow.” – Norma, founder of Prana Yoga
We’ve experienced firsthand that Yoga is not just a physical practice that can transform our bodies. It has the power to transform mind and soul, connecting us with our true essence. And as there are countless physical and mental benefits, those eventually become secondary once you experience the deeper purpose that yoga has for you.

This is why Prana Yoga strives to be a safe and welcoming space, one where each student can experience the transformative power of yoga as they embark on their own process of self-discovery and body awareness.
